AND THE SURVEY SAYS….
Fact AND Fiction!!!
Ok this stemmed from an e-mail I received this morning among the pile of forwards I get every once in a while from a family friend. It is as follows:
Refuse New Coins
Please help do this.. Refuse to accept these when they are handed to you .
I received one from the Post Office as change and I asked for a dollar bill instead.
The lady just smiled and said ‘way to go’ , so she had read this e -mail .
Please help out…our world is in enough trouble without this too!!!!! U.S.Government to Release New Dollar Coins
You guessed it
‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ IS GONE!!!
If ever there was a reason to boycott something, THIS IS IT!!!!
DO NOT ACCEPT THE NEW DOLLAR COINS AS CHANGE. Together we can force them out of circulation.
So, me…being the God fearing, Red White and Blue bleeding American that I am…I immediately knee jerk from calm, to pissed off in under a second (and before you make a smart @$$ comment, yes, I am a fast reader!)! So, naturally, I pop over to my search engine and start the search!
Turns out that a batch of coins was produced without the inscription "In God We Trust" to the tune of an estimated 50,000 total. BUT, the term which has been a standard on American coinage since 1938, is not actually going to be taken off of the coins the Mint claims that these coins were made in error.
One thing that will be different about these coins is that the wording "In God We Trust E Pluribus Unum" will be on the edge, instead of the face, made possible by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005
. Even though this particular story is a bit old because these coins were supposedly discovered in February of 2007 I wanted to post this here because obviously this e-mail, which is for the most part false, is still going around and this is pretty believable so, I wanted to lay down facts. For your viewing pleasure the coin in question:
And while we’re on the subject, new coins are being released in 2009! They will be one dollar gold coins with the likeness’ of Presidents Harrison
, and Taylor
being honored on the face with the reverse side featuring the Statue of Liberty

Some of you might ask, "why does this belong on the Geek Shop?". Well, first of all, as many of you know, geeks will collect almost anything!..especially if said collections are items that only have a perceived "value" to the geek; examples being swords, toys, dragon statuettes, favorite movie memorabilia and of course each of these items comes with a special production number and certificate of authenticity…so you know its good ;) And second because I’m going to have to say that a large portion of the geek community, if given the chance, would probably prefer to discard their wallet in exchange for a satchel or pouch full of coins to tie around their belt…you know…just in case the opportunity might arise to throw the pouch on the table while bartering or trading for wears, supplies, furs, weapons, etc.
Making plans to shine my swords and dust off my dragon warriors this weekend,
