Honestly I thought this was just going to be another “untold story” of Cap vs. the Nazi’s who somehow teams up with Black Panther in the middle and they kick Nazi @$$ together!

Boy was I wrong!

Well actually I was kinda right because that will probably roll out to be the bare bones of this story but the writing in this story is phenomenal! Hudlin does a superb job of really emphasizing fan favorite characteristics in each of the classic heroes and villians.
Cap is the genuinely good guy bleeding red, white and blue, Hiltler and the Nazi’s are all D-Bags, Fury and his Howling Commandos are rough around the edges trained killers, Baron Strucker is his one eyed diabolical self and Black Panther is the confident martial arts mastering monarch everyone loves.
This is a great story for anyone who picks it up period and the sketchy art by Cowan really does a nice job of complimenting the story.

Looking forward to issue #2,
~Steve

Here’s the thing, I dig Captain America and in the regular series I think Brubaker has done a really great job but I am just plain disappointed in this series. We all knew Steve was coming back and personally I think they did an decent job, time wise, in how long he’s been gone but this was not A game Captain America. The portion of the book when Rogers and Red Skull are having a battle of the brains was way under developed. Come ON! These guys are arch enemies and they have all of 5 water skimming lines of dialogue while they are fighting for their lives and control of Captain America’s body!?! Good lord! They might as well have been saying:

"I hate you"
"No, I hate YOU"
"Well I hate you more"
"Nuh uh I hate YOU more"
"Well your Mom’s a (expletive deleted)"

Right? You get the point.

Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I expected too much. Maybe I should have waited for the TPB instead of wasting $24 on the series. Or maybe I should have just checked out the 10 different books Steve Rogers showed up in BEFORE THIS SERIES WAS COMPLETE!!! (okay, three exclamation points is a bit much and 10 books may be an exaggeration but COME ON)

Going to go read Green Lantern to get out of this funk,
~Steve

That was my review on Comixology.com and you’d think that would be enough but, as you can see, I’m not too happy.  So, where else to vent your frustrations but FACEBOOK?

Steven Ventress – This is how I felt about Captain America: Reborn #6. Also, was anybody else pissed off about the doomsday shot at the end that looked like they just transposed a scene from War of the Worlds and put Steve Rogers in for Tom Cruise?!? I expected more from Brubaker.

Steven Ventress – So, after that last comment I HAD to make this. Don’t worry…I hate me too.

So, yeah . . . enjoy!

This was a good issue #1. The story is solid, they had to bring back Wolverine somehow right? So instead of resurrecting him they bring in the son to fill daddies shoes in the Ultimate Universe, that I can dig. The only question is, who is Jimmy’s mother? Kitty mentions Colossus when his claws are magically covered by what I’m assuming is adamantium but last time I checked AHHnold was the last man to carry a baby in his man uterus. The cover option were so so nothing really too impressive but this is a really solid book overall.

Letters to the Comic Shop 1/12/10

January 12, 2010 § Leave a comment

Comix Crew,

I’ve decided that since Wal-Mart runs the world and now some stores in our area have decided to force it’s customers to purchase reusable bags, I will be bringing in the plastic bags from my past purchases so that you can use them again with other customers! I’ll also be buying too big sweat pants in order to shove comics, and other things I buy, down my pants because I 1) love mother earth and 2) want to be just like the people at Wal-Mart…and I’m always seeing HUGE people pouring out of sweats in Wal-Mart…that’s not FAT!!!  They’re just doing their part to save the world!!!…right?

THE PULL

AMAZING SPIDERMAN # 617 GAUNTLET TIE IN
ADVENTURE COMICS # 509
BATMAN # 695

Short list this week…this is crap!  If I don’t have comics to read I’ll have more time to WORK!  NOOOOOO0000000ooooooo…

Have a good week,

Reading Back Issue Comics – Batman #623 circa 2004

October 8, 2009 § Leave a comment

I love reading comics.  So, much so that I constantly have comics laying around that need reading.  As the old adage says, “So many comics, so little time”…wait…yeah.

Anyways, when I read mass amounts of comics all at once, I usually have one page throughout my reading that seems to jump out at me.  This time it happened to be pg16 of Batman #623.

This is a great page.  The red is so vivid against the black back drop.  Then right in the middle of the page you see young Bruce’s tears flowing from his downturned eyes, the feeling of sadness there is palpable.  The next section all you see is the hands of Bruce’s parents reaching up to him, just reaching his fingertips; the imagery here is powerful, while he is powerless to help them there is still a connection and love portrayed by the slightest touch.

The dialog here is also amazing.  This is a dream sequence, one of the many had by Bruce of his parents murder, and they are giving him advice about the current case he is working on.  While in the dream the parents are “speaking” it’s important to remember that this is really Bruce going through the case in his mind incorporated into a dream; and that is part of what makes this panel so good.  This same scrutiny could have been made while Batman sat poised among the rooftops speaking aloud to himself or even as a thought, and yet the artist , Eduardo Risso, and the writer, Brian Azzarello, have turned something that could have been ‘just another page in a comic book’ into art.

For your viewing pleasure:

Not concerned that I read too much into it because ‘for me’ it was all that was written above,

Old Man Logan: Marvel “What the …”

October 5, 2009 § Leave a comment

I saw this on Marvel.com today and laughed the whole way through.

It was created thanks to the series, “Old Man Logan”, which is amazing; and mostly takes place in an old folks home after Daken decides to put Logan in with a lot of other old heroes…just funny!  The part with Punisher is my favorite…enjoy.

Some days, like today for instance, I hate being a comic geek…

Drinking away the thought that even comics have been dumbed down in order to better fit a younger generation that no longer enjoys real comics for lack of understanding,

Turning Movies into Comic Books

September 28, 2009 § Leave a comment

Every single time a new super hero movie comes out, a new series of comic books HAVE to come out too.  Which comic books am I speaking of?  The ones that take our beloved heroes stories and change them up a bit to fit the new story line for the MOVIE.  Case in Point:  New movie Iron Man 2 so new comic book…

Iron Man Vs. Whiplash #1

Now, I don’t know exactly how different this new movie storyline is going to be from the comic books but these comics are just completely worthless.  I understand that Marvel needs to make money and that publishing books based on the movie sparks interest in and reaches a whole new target audience, but I feel like these new books are cheating on the old storylines!

Think about it!  Why did they choose to make a movie with these characters?  BECAUSE OF THE COMIC BOOKS!  The stories and characters in the comic books were so good somebody thought it would be a good idea to make movies out of them right?!?  So, why reverse the process?!?  We’re not making a movie from completely new concepts, stories and characters and some genius thought it would be a good idea to put them in a comic book NO!!!  It’s the other way around people!

I understand that the story has to change a bit to fit the silver screen and I don’t care about that; If I walk into a movie and in no way expect them to follow the comics I walk away entertained every time!  The point is that in the comic world it is meaningless to release a book like this;  Marvel should do itself a favor and instead put out a fresh series outlining the real history of these two characters so that comic people and movie people will pick it up and possibly enjoy it, instead of releasing the ‘refab’ story and having it suck like most of these comic types do.

Going to get my inhaler and calm down a bit now,
~Steve
